"My name is Dustin Baker. I am 43 years old and have been involved in athletics as long as I can remember.

In 2001, I entered my 1st ½ Ironman distance race and became immediately hooked on the sport of triathlon. Following that race, I set my eyes on qualifying for the Ironman World Championships held on the Big Island of Hawaii. It took me many years to develop the fitness base to be able to compete for a coveted qualifying slot, but I achieved my goal at the 2009 edition of Ironman Cozumel. My overall finish at Ironman Cozumel provided me the opportunity to race at the 2010 Ironman World Championships. In addition to racing triathlon, I’ve run many marathons, competed in ultra-cycling events including the 2008 Paris-Brest-Paris, and more recently completed the Bear Chase 50K (32 miles) trail run in Colorado. Needless to say, I enjoy racing!

I began the 2014 racing season performing well at local shorter-distance running events and was looking forward to participating in the North Face Endurance Trail Championships in San Francisco in December. However, after a small home improvement project in early July, my lower back and right hip became extremely sore. I rested for a few days, but did not see much improvement. I consulted with general practitioner who recommended cortisone injections coupled with physical therapy. Despite many months of physical therapy, my condition did not improve. Luckily, I was referred to Dr. Leckie.

Dr. Leckie evaluated my condition and determined that a spinal decompression with a laminectomy/microdisectomy would alleviate the pain and numbness I had been experiencing for months. I found Dr. Leckie and his staff extremely accommodating. Dr. Leckie carefully explained his findings on the MRI and CT and equipped me with helpful materials to understand the procedure. Just as Dr. Leckie predicted, the pain in my right leg and hip were gone following the procedure.

My condition has continued to improve since the operation and I have been able to slowly incorporate exercise back into my lifestyle. I’m enjoying running with my 7 month old son in our new baby jogger and are looking forward to resuming short-distances races with the Cape Cod Athletic Club towards the end of the year. Additionally, I have been very active with summer projects around my house and do not have to think about how I bend or twist. I feel great! I could not be happier with the result of Dr. Leckie’s work. I highly recommend Dr. Leckie and his staff if you are experiencing any orthopedic challenges."
