Lumbar Laminectomy

Learn About Lumbar Laminectomy

Our Spine Program is run by Awarded Spine Expert Dr. Steven Leckie.

About Lumbar Laminectomy:

A Minimally Invasive Lumbar Laminectomy, also known as Spinal Decompression Surgery, is a procedure performed to treat pain caused by spinal nerve compression which is often the result of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis. The procedure removes a small piece of the lamina of the spine so that the spinal nerve or spinal canal can be decompressed and symptoms can be relieved.

How is it performed?

This Minimally Invasive Spinal procedure is performed with a posterior approach (from the back). First, the surgeon will make a small incision over the affected vertebra and begin gently moving muscle aside. Specialized instruments are then used to remove the lamina, to create the extra room in the spinal canal for the nerve roots. If a herniated disc is present, the surgeon may also remove that portion of the disc, along with any bone or soft tissue that may be the cause of pressure or pain.
