What is it?
Trauma can occasionally result in injuries that will not heal on their own and will require surgical treatment. Examples can include lacerations of tendons that bend and extend the fingers and ruptures of some of the ligaments that stabilize the digits and wrist.
How is it Performed?
The surgical treatment will depend on the injury. This can involve either suture repair of tendons and ligaments or include bone anchors to repair ligaments back to bone or tendon transfers to restore function. This treatment is very specific to each injury and will require evaluation by a hand surgeon to determine the correct surgical procedure. These injuries generally involve immobilization after surgery and close follow up with a hand therapist.
