About Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF):

A Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a Minimally Invasive Spine procedure, which involves the removal of a herniated disc and the fusion of two vertebrae. The goal of this procedure is to alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves which causes localized pain in the lower back as well as pain that radiates into the buttocks and legs (known as Sciatica).  The spinal nerves are most often impinged or pinched due to a lumbar disc herniation, Degenerative Disc Disease, Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and instability of the spine (Spondylolisthesis).  The long term goal of this procedure is also to ensure the stability of the spine after the damaged disc has been removed.

How is it performed?

A TLIF is performed by first making a small incision through in the area of the herniated or damaged spinal disc . A procedure known as a Laminectomy is then performed to allow the surgeon to visualize the spinal canal. The degenerated or herniated disc is removed and a small fusion cage is inserted into the space where the disc was removed.  The removal of the lamina and the damaged spinal disc relieves the pressure on the spinal nerve that is causing painful symptoms. Small rods and screws are added to stabilize the motion spine.  Over time the fusion cage implant will knit with the vertebrae above and below to form a more stable spinal segment.
