Dr. Steven Leckie: Spine has multiple nerves that exit in the cervical spine, those nerves go down the arm and provide motor strength for the shoulders, the arm, the hand and fingers, and also sensation in the low back and the lumbar spine. Those nerves exit down the leg to provide motor strength and sensation for the lower extremities. Sometimes, those nerves as they are exiting the spinal canal can be compressed and that compression can either be from a disc herniation, the discs or the shock absorbers in the spine in between each of the bones or it can be from a bone spur, which is also called an osteophyte or it can be from stenosis, and stenosis means the space in the spinal canal is not wide enough for the nerves to pass through. There are a variety of treatment options for those. The initial treatment options are typically conservative management with physical therapy and medications, and if that’s not working, sometimes a spinal injection. And if that’s not working, then a surgical decompression procedure. And we have all of those resources available here at our disposal and if this is a problem that is affecting you, radiating arm pain or leg pain that could be coming from your spine, this is something that we may be able to help you with.
