Arthritis related neck pain is aggravating at best, debilitating at worst. Most people think surgery is the only way to improve symptoms of neck (cervical) arthritis, but that thought is far from the truth. There are currently more effective non-surgical treatment options than ever. Two of the most common ones are:
- Physical therapy. The two goals of physical therapy are (1) increase neck mobility (2) increase neck strength. These goals are accomplished through a program prescribed and monitored by a physical therapist. Patients who adhere to their program can expect symptom relief in a short period of time.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This group of non-narcotic medications decreases inflammation and pain. They are available over-the-counter and by prescription—the choice regarding which one is better depends on the severity of the condition and opinion of an orthopedic spine specialist. Some common NSAIDs include Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and Celebrex.
In many cases, a combination—if not all—of these treatment options will be used. Like most orthopedic conditions, patients who are healthy and in good physical condition can expect maximum symptom relief.
