What is it?
Carpal Tunnel Release is a procedure used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. The procedure provides more room for the median nerve and tendons passing through the tunnel. A major goal of the procedure is to release or decompress the nerve that is causing the symptoms in the affected area. The operation involves surgically cutting through the ‘roof’ of the carpal tunnel. This technique provides more space for the targeted nerve and tendons.
How is it Performed?
The surgeon will make a small incision in the palm and a special knife is used to transect the ‘roof’ of the carpal tunnel (transverse carpal ligament) to open the space giving the nerve more room. Sutures are placed at the incision site and the area is wrapped with soft sterile dressing. No splint or immobilization is necessary. The patient is allowed to use the hand for light activities immediately after surgery.
