What is it?
This procedure is meant to treat skier’s thumb which in short is a painful injury to a ligament of the thumb. This is caused by a forceful stretch towards the outer direction of the thumb ligament. This occurs when bracing for a fall with an outstretched hand or when skiers fall with the pole in hand causing their thumb to stretch when the handle of the pole comes in contact with the ground. When the ligament is torn, surgical intervention is the only appropriate option for repair.
How is it Performed?
A small incision is made on the inner half of the thumb and the back of the thumb. The ligament is sutured to itself or to an adjacent bone. If a fracture is present, the fracture also becomes repaired with wires and screws.
