About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a compressed nerve in the wrist. This occurs in the space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel where the median nerve and flexor tendons pass from the forearm into the hand. If this space is too tight, this can put too much pressure on the nerve causing symptoms.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and sometimes ring fingers (may occur at night when sleeping, driving and talking on the phone)
- Clumsiness and tendency to drop things
- Weak grip
How is it Treated?
- Activity modification and avoiding extremes of wrist position
- Wrist splints at night to maintain a neutral position
- Steroid injections for temporary relief
- Surgical release
