Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement, Hip Replacement

The hip is one of the body’s largest joints and manages much of your mobility. If you are affected by any form of arthritis or have a hip disease, this can damage your hip’s ability to function and put you in great discomfort. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The surface of the hip ball and socket are covered with articular cartilage–a smooth tissue that cushions the ends of the bones and allows them to move with ease. A thin tissue, known as synovial membrane, surrounds the hip joint.

Within a healthy hip, this membrane makes a small amount of fluid that lubricates the cartilage and gets rid of nearly all friction during hip movement. As we age, cartilage can gradually deteriorate. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in the hip, get in touch with us at Plymouth Bay Orthopedic Associates today to find out if you are a candidate for hip replacement.

What Is Hip Replacement?

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which one of our providers extracts a hip joint affected by arthritis and replaces it with an artificial joint made from metallic and plastic materials. Typically done when all other methods of treatment have failed to improve pain, hip replacement should relieve a painful hip joint and improve mobility.

The procedure can take a few hours. One of our highly skilled orthopedic surgeons will remove the damaged cartilage and bone and then position the customized implants to restore the alignment and function of your hip.

How Can Hip Replacement Help?

Hip replacement can benefit you if you are suffering from:

  • Hip pain that limits everyday activities
  • Hip pain that continues while resting
  • Stiffness in a hip that limits the ability to move
  • Inadequate pain relief from drugs, physical therapy, or walking supports

If any of these symptoms describe your situation, then hip replacement might the answer to giving you the relief you need.

Am I a Good Candidate?

We base your candidacy for hip replacement on the symptoms you experience as well as your medical history.

What Can I Expect?

You can expect long-lasting pain relief and improved mobility. Hip replacements are safe and last for years. If you are ready to get back to living life comfortably, contact the hip replacement specialists at Plymouth Bay Orthopedic Associates in Duxbury. We look forward to hearing from you.
