ITB Tendonitis

+ 1 781-934-2400

About ITB Tendonitis:

ITB Tendinitis is a condition that occurs when the iliotibial band (IT Band) becomes tight and compresses the tissue causing it to rub against the outer part of the femur.  The IT Band is a ligament running along the outer part of the thigh connecting to the outside of the knee. This band acts as a stabilizer to the knee and hip when running. When the ligament becomes inflamed, it can become very painful to those affected.

It is also called Runner’s Knee.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Pain in the hip and knees that gets progressively worse with overuse.  This is common among distance runners
  • Pain on the lateral side of the knee
  • Snapping or popping sound around the knee area
  • Swelling below the knee

How is it Treated?

  • Physical Therapy
  • Pain medications
  • Cortisone or other medication based injections
  • This condition may require surgery. Seeing an orthopedic specialist should be considered.
