What is it?
Fracture repair is a procedure that places metal screws, pins, rods, and/or plates in a broken bone in an effort to repair and allow the bone to properly heal. Bone fracture repair is used when casting or bracing a broken bone would not be an effective method to properly heal a bone. A person’s functioning mobility can be handicapped if not repaired correctly which is why this procedure is necessary for certain instances.
How is it Performed?
First, the procedure reduces a broken bone or is put back into place. Secondly, the procedure places an internal fixation device on the reduced bone. This surgery is often performed with a combination of screws, plates, rods, and pins that piece and keep the broken bone together.
